In addition to particles, film contamination is a problem, as the following example from quality assurance in the production of electrical transmission systems shows.<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fw-row\"><div id=\"column-624d3e711b429\" class=\"fw-col-sm-12 tf-sh-ca2c95f302ae2c62b155d1c7b97b632c\"><div class=\"fw-wrap-col-inner clearfix\"><div class=\"fw-col-inner\"><div class=\"fw-divider-space space-sm clearfix\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fw-row\"><div id=\"column-624d3e711b639\" class=\"fw-col-sm-12 tf-sh-ca2c95f302ae2c62b155d1c7b97b632c\"><div class=\"fw-wrap-col-inner clearfix\"><div class=\"fw-col-inner\"><div class=\"fw-text-box tf-sh-9ae08b53c53d5cc509f64288bf6e1134\"><div class=\"fw-text-inner\"><p>Our customer had repeated complaints about malfunctions in automatic transmission systems. After internal tests, the failures could be attributed to the malfunctioning of a brake. A defect in the mechanics was quickly ruled out, thus raising the suspicion that residual contamination on the functional surfaces could impair the braking effect. Our test laboratory examined the cleanliness of the brake components and we were able to give the customer specific advice on how to solve the problem.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e964a9d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e964a9d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rjl-microanalytic.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/elementor\/thumbs\/Abb-1_Bremskomponente-pmypgoqa50xxtauzegeesvd92obfb53ua14wvywu7c.jpg\" title=\"Fig 1_Brake component\" alt=\"Abb 1_Bremskomponente\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ccbb54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ccbb54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our team disassembled both functional and faulty brake components and extracted the residual contamination from the functional surfaces using solvents. Initially, the particulate contaminants were filtered from the solvent onto a membrane and analyzed with the help of automatic\u00a0<a class=\"unterstrichen\" href=\"\/en\/analysenservice-mit-iso-17025-akkreditierung\/sem-edx-analytik-von-strukturen-und-werkstoffen\/\">SEM-EDX analysis.<\/a>\u00a0With this method, number, size and\u00a0<a class=\"unterstrichen\" href=\"\/en\/analysenservice-mit-iso-17025-akkreditierung\/sem-edx-identifikation-partikelverunreinigungen\/\">particle composition<\/a>\u00a0were individually determined. The result of our SEM-EDX analysis showed that the amount of particles on both brakes was equally small and unspecific. In particular, no abrasive particles such as silicates, corundum or other grinding residues were found. With this result, we were able to rule out particulate contamination as the cause of failure.<\/p><p>In the next step, we examined the surface tension of the functional surfaces with test ink pens and were able to identify that there was a minor filmic contamination on the faulty brake components. But where did this oily contamination come from and how could it get into the braking mechanism?<\/p><p>To answer this question, we selectively destilled the solvent from the rinsing medium using a rotary evaporator. The oily impurity remained as residue and was then analzyed with Fourier-Transform-<a class=\"unterstrichen\" href=\"\/en\/analysenservice-mit-iso-17025-akkreditierung\/raman-ftir-spektroskopie-organische-filmische-verunreinigungen\/\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">Infrared-Spectrometry (FTIR).<\/a>\u00a0The customer provided us four reference samples from the production as potential \"suspects\", which we compared with the unknown filmic contamination.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d49b92d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d49b92d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rjl-microanalytic.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/elementor\/thumbs\/FTIR-Spektrum-filmische-Verunreinigung-pmyphr9pr0khrfj69oc6ik5oepom5j7n0sitqz94wc.png\" title=\"FTIR spectrum filmic contamination\" alt=\"FTIR Spektrum filmische Verunreinigung\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c590cd6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c590cd6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The spectral comparison indeed showed good agreement with one of the reference substances. It was an adhesive oil that was used in a neighboring production step and unintentionally got transfered into the brake components.
