SEM-EDX ANALYSIS OF GUNSHOT RESIDUE (GSR)
Trace Detection Made Easy - Gunshot Detection with the Phenom ParticleX
Shot detection using SEM-EDX
Method of forensic science
The detection of gunshot residue (GSR) using SEM-EDX has become an established method in forensic science for the proof of firearm use. The police secure the traces using adhesive pads from the suspect's hands and clothing.
Aim of the SEM-EDX analysis is to identify the gunshot residue particles based on characteristic elements. In conventional ammunition, gunshot residue contains the elements lead (Pb), barium (Ba) and antimony (Sb). The combination of these specific elements does not occur in nature, making the evidence court-proof.
In SINTOX ammunition, which is specifically used by federal or state authorities, the primers are doped with gallium (Ga) or gadolinium (Gd) to ensure reliable detection. These elements can also be easily detected using EDX.

Excellent suitability
Perfect result in 15 minutes
Standardized GSR samples for testing the suitability of SEM-EDX systems for GSR analysis are provided by the ENFSI programme. During these tests, the ParticleX regularly achieves the best results at the shortest measurement time. The following results were achieved on the GSR2017 sample within 15 minutes.
The table shows a detection rate of 100% in all size classes down to the smallest GSR particles of 0.5 µm.
This results in an excellent Z-score for the GSR suitability test of the Phenom ParticleX.
